Big Freedia‘s longtime partner, Devon Hurst, has died from diabetes. In a late-night May 15 Instagram post, the New Orleans bounce icon shared the sad news.
“I’m devastated to have to announce that today my partner of 20 years Devon Hurst passed away peacefully due to complications from diabetes, surrounded by his loving family,” Freedia wrote.
“He is survived by his mother Chareen Hurst, his sisters Meshonda ,Stephany and Jayla, his brothers , Steven ,Stephon and Malcolm his daughter Zyrielle , his son Davone and his nieces and nephews and his partner Freddie Ross Jr.”
The music star and entrepreneur noted the impact of the loss.
“He will be deeply missed by everyone in this community who knew him and loved him,” Freedia added. “We take comfort in knowing he is free from any pain and suffering, and is at peace in the loving arms of Jesus Christ ”
The news highlights the grim realities of the impact of diabetes within the Black community. Research shows that Black adults in the United States face a significantly higher burden of diabetes than their white counterparts. They are about 1.4 times more likely to be diagnosed with the disease and 40% more likely to die from it compared to non-Hispanic white adults.
Black diabetes patients also experience higher rates of hospitalization for uncontrolled diabetes and are at greater risk of developing end-stage kidney disease as a result. Averages are slightly higher among Black women compared to Black men.
Hurst played a key role in Big Freedia’s professional circle, frequently helping manage her bookings and business affairs. In Season 2 of her show, which documents her journey to create a gospel album, Hurst openly addressed the backlash Freedia faced from the gospel community due to her identity.
In announcing his deaths, Freedia requested privacy for his family and loved ones at this. A public service will be held.
