Scarface: Tiny Desk Concert

Scarface’s Tiny Desk concert is truly a testament to his lifelong dedication to the craft as an emcee and producer. Every word and note in this incredible 30-minute set exudes passion and purpose. Interestingly, during our first meeting, I discovered that his love for golf matches his love for music. He was actually playing a round when we met, but even then, his attention was thinly spread between the game and our conversation. Just three days before the concert, while we were in the midst of rehearsals, Facemob surprised me with a call asking, “What if I brought Mike Dean?” This unexpected addition elevated my excitement to another level, setting the stage for an extraordinary performance that I couldn’t wait to witness.

Mike Dean brought an incredible level of authenticity to this performance, sharing heartfelt stories that added a beautiful touch. His signature keys and synths are present on so many of Scarface’s iconic tracks and Rap-A-Lot records. In this special moment, we are treated to a unique glimpse of Scarface as a conductor, taking us through various eras of his catalog. From the soulful “On My Block” to the nostalgic “Mary Jane” and the haunting “I Seen a Man Die,” it’s a truly unforgettable experience.

Scarface, together with Rakim, was recently honored with the first-ever Hip-Hop Grandmaster Award by the newly established Paid in Full Foundation. This prestigious accolade comes with a significant financial prize and healthcare benefits. When it comes to the ongoing discussion about the greatest figures in hip-hop, Scarface’s position is unquestionable as one of the most influential storytellers in the culture. His Tiny Desk performance is a shining example of his immense talent.
