Tragedy in Detroit: Child Dies After Being Struck By Ice Cream Truck

A tragedy struck a Detroit family when an ice cream truck hit and killed a young child in the street April 14.

According to Click on Detroit, the child was killed around 7 p.m. after being struck. The vehicle’s driver remained on the scene and was taken into custody by police officers. The incident occurred on Detroit’s west side between Diversey Avenue and Rutland Street.

Detroit police 6th Precinct Captain Shannon Hampton confirmed that the driver was taken in for questioning.

“So at approximately 7 p.m., just after we were notified of an accident here at Rutland Street and Diversey Avenue, where an ice cream truck hit a tender-aged child and fatally wounded that child. The driver did remain on scene and has been taken into custody,” Hampton said.

The police department did not release any other information about the suspect or whether he would be facing any charges. No details were revealed regarding the circumstances surrounding the tragic accident. Hampton did stress the importance of knowing the area when children are around and also mentioned that the weather is getting better, which will lead to more people being outside enjoying the warmth.

“This time of year, with the weather breaking, it’s very important that everybody’s mindful that the children are out and they’re playing. If you see school buses and ice cream trucks, just slow down a little and check your surroundings before proceeding past them,” Hampton said.

Police officials have stated that their homicide fatal squad is investigating the incident. At the same time, the department will have its chaplain squad at the scene of the tragedy to support the police officers and the families as well.

“We made sure that we brought plenty of resources, including our chaplain squad, to make sure they’re here to support the officers as well as the family. We’re just here to pray for the family right now,” Hampton said, according to WXYZ.
