The true meaning of a popular Black dance song has finally been revealed to the public. And trust us when we tell you, the rest of Black America who grew up listening and vibing to this track were probably not prepared to hear it!
We’re talking about the 2006 Dem Franchise Boyz hit, “Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It.” The popular “snap” song, produced by So So Def and featuring Peanut and Charlay, became a dance classic, with many folks, both young and old, catching on to the simple moves in the music video. The song, from the same Atlanta rap group that also brought us “I Think They Like Me” and “White Tee,” has a catchy and addictive beat, which helped it become a long-standing party anthem.
Thanks to a now-viral clip from the “Dynasty Dialogue” podcast, it appears we may have all been unknowingly leaning and rocking to a song that represented something other than what we thought. When legendary Atlanta “snap” music artists Smurf (from Show Stoppas) and Snap (from Cash Camp) stopped by for an new interview recently, they explained that the song was actually referring to lean (a drink usually comprised of codeine cough syrup and sprite or sometime hard candy) and a crack rock.
“‘Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It’ is not what you think it is. ‘Lean Wit It, Rock Wit It.’ ‘Lean.’ ‘Rock.’ It ain’t what you think it is boy, these is trappers,” Smurf explained referring to a popular Atlanta slang name for drug-dealers.
As you might expect, once this explanation began making the rounds on social media, many users who grew up leaning and snapping to the song were taken aback at this revelation.
“Omfggg we were kids dancing to this drug anthem wtfff lmfaoooooo,” wrote one user on X/Twitter.
Some wish the artists would have kept the secret to themselves rather than pulling back the curtain on the true meaning of the song.
“Nobody thinks of drugs when they hear this we think about dancing and snapping he could’ve kept this info,” said another.
“You mean to tell me this song was about selling lean and crack…and these mfs had us out here dancing looking like the crack heads they’re selling it too…MY CHILDHOOD IS A LIE,” one other user wrote.
Added another: “THEY. COULD’VE. KEPT. THIS. TO. THEMSELVES. TF!?”
One other user on TikTok was too stunned to speak.
Said one other user on TikTok: “I just been snapping and throwing my arms this whole time and I’m a part of the damn cartel. I work at CVS Pharmacy!”
However, there were some users who picked up what the song was putting down years ago but decided to disregard it for the sake of the dancery.
“Them verses told you everything you needed to know, but we was too young to know or even give af. That Lean Wit It Rock Wit It hook and dance was everything,” one person said.
“I was 9 when this song dropped, I knew what it meant since I was 12. Y’all haven’t known for TWENTY YEARS? tf,” one user said.
One user on TikTok also admitted to just skipping over it, saying: “We already knew that unc. We just wanted to do our lil dancey dance back then.”
Wow, color us shocked. Do you hear the reference? We’ll leave it up to you to decide for yourself.
