A birthday trip meant for celebration ended in horror 7or a New York accountant whose final messages home read more like a distress signal than updates from a tropical birthday getaway.
Melissa Kerry Samnath, a 35-year-old Queens woman, was found unconscious and slumped in a wheelchair outside a hospital in Jamaica, according to PEOPLE. Authorities said she suffered multiple blunt-force injuries to the head. Jamaican police confirmed the man believed to be her husband, Dane Watson, dropped her off at Cornwall Regional Hospital in St. James on April 29 before disappearing into the night.
Hours earlier, Samnath had sent an eerie message to her family back in New York, pleading for help and sharing her location, according to local reports obtained by the New York Post. One of the messages reportedly read: “I need you to call the cops.”
Authorities say Samnath, a dual U.S.-Jamaican citizen, had traveled to the island to celebrate her 35th birthday with Watson, whom she married in December 2025 after they met online. Family members, however, have questioned whether the marriage was legitimate, the Daily Mail reported.
Police later discovered blood and personal belongings believed to belong to Samnath at a home in Norwood, St. James, where investigators suspect the attack happened. Neighbors reportedly told local media they heard no screams or signs of a disturbance, PEOPLE also reported.
For nearly three weeks, no one heard from Samnath’s husband as police intensified their search for him. In the meantime, pressure from the public and Samnath’s family kept the search alive. Then, on Friday (May 15), authorities said family members helped turn Watson over to police in St. Mary Parish after concerns emerged about his safety. He was taken into custody and transferred to the investigators in St. James.
As of Tuesday (May 19), no formal charges had been made public. It’s unclear if Watson has obtained legal representation. Jamaican authorities continue to investigate the killing.
Back in New York, grief has spread across Samnath’s family and community. Loved ones described her in online memorials as a vibrant, adventurous and deeply devoted woman, who loved to travel and celebrate life. Now, the same trip meant to mark another year has become the final chapter in a case still haunted by unanswered questions.
A GoFundMe was set up to assist with memorial expenses for Samnath. So far, it has raised over $17,000 of a $20,000 goal.
