Just days after we told you about the seven Spelman College sisters who made headlines for earning the title of valedictorian, Tuskegee University is proving this is its “Renaissance Era,” as 10 members of its Class of 2026 maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA for all four years of college.
Dr. Mark A. Brown, president of the top-tier HBCU, called the students “a shining example of what the Tuskegee experience can be” on the school website. These Golden Tigers deserve to shine, and The Root is taking a closer look at the 10 standout students behind the achievement.
Joi Kayla Axem

Biology pre-med major Joi Kayla Axem paired her perfect GPA with leadership and research experience, pointing toward a future in medicine. According to her LinkedIn profile, Axem served as president of both the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students and the Career Center Ambassadors. Her experience also includes cancer and cardiovascular disease research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She even spent time in Paris completing internships in public health and sustainability. Axem plans to impact underserved communities as a pediatrician.
Kerri Danielle Barnes

Kerri Danielle Barnes made it clear that academic excellence and campus leadership can go hand in hand. According to a graduation profile shared on a Tuskegee University Instagram page, the former Miss Biology held leadership roles with the Student Activities Board, the Office of Admissions, the NAACP, and the SGA, and also served in mentoring and social media roles. Tuskegee also highlighted the summa cum laude graduate as a College of Arts and Sciences University Scholar, three-time Eminent Scholar and Distinguished Presidential Scholar.
Nilajah Nyota Buchanan

Nilajah Nyota Buchanan used her years at Tuskegee to build a strong foundation for a future in medicine. According to the university, the biology major from Huntsville, Alabama, is headed to Emory for graduate study and has long aimed for a career in cardiology, specifically cardiothoracic surgery. Her LinkedIn profile adds that she earned a psychology minor, has experience in clinical research, and is interested in global and community-based healthcare. She’s currently involved in a sanitation initiative to address public health in South Africa.
Yasmin Aleksandria Davis

Yasmin Aleksandria Davis has already mapped out a mission-driven path for her medical future. Based on her LinkedIn profile, the biology pre-med scholar plans to become an OB-GYN, with a strong interest in women’s health, maternal health advocacy, and reducing disparities in reproductive care. Her background also includes research, clinical internships, and leadership involvement that support those goals. Graduating summa cum laude, Davis is passionate about care and advocacy.
Alaynah Eldridge

According to Tuskegee, Alaynah Eldridge balanced a double major in English Language Arts Education and English Literature while keeping her perfect GPA. The Mobile, Alabama, native told the university that the pandemic era and national racial unrest deepened her desire for an academically rigorous HBCU environment, and she was led to Tuskegee. Her college experience also included studying abroad in Berlin, where she felt like her ancestors’ wildest dream. Next up, she is considering teaching in Alabama, with long-term interests in education leadership and curriculum design.
Darren Raymond Hall

Darren Raymond Hall brought a strong technical edge to his 4.0 journey. According to his LinkedIn profile, the computer science graduate gained experience across data engineering, machine learning, software development, and cloud technologies through both internships and research. His listed skills include Python, C++, SQL, Oracle, and Power BI, creating opportunities in both data science and software engineering.
Keevion Hardamon

Keevion Hardamon is a first-generation college graduate from Dothan, Alabama. Completing double majors in electrical and computer engineering, he attended Troy University and Wallace Community College before finding the right fit at Tuskegee, where he thrived in a more personal academic setting. He has a job lined up with NextEra Energy as a protection and control engineer. “Tuskegee helped me become a man. It really shaped me, he told Tuskegee University. “It changed my mindset. It changed everything about the way I move in life.”
Charniece Elliana Jones

Charniece Elliana Jones applied excellence to the business side of education. Based on information from her LinkedIn profile, Jones studied accounting while building a foundation in financial reporting, forecasting, auditing, business valuation, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Her profile also highlights a strong interest in data analysis and problem-solving, which helps explain why accounting became such a natural fit.
Brooklyn Monae Macklin

Based on her LinkedIn profile, Brooklyn Monae Macklin completed her bachelor’s degree in animal science with a pre-veterinary focus and has already continued on at Tuskegee in its Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program—the only program of its kind at an HBCU. The Cleveland native’s activities included serving as the Ohio Club secretary, participating in the soccer club, and being involved with veterinary student organizations such as VetEvolve, the International Veterinary Student Association, and Omega Tau Sigma.
Leah D. Saunders

Leah D. Saunders is planning for a future in environmental science and service. According to her LinkedIn profile and the ADAC-ARCTIC site, Saunders studied environmental science at Tuskegee and planned to return home to Clarksville, Ohio, after graduating to work for a federal environmental agency. Her fellowship work focused on soil remediation, and she also participated in the 2025 Arctic Summer Internship Program. Saunders was recently inducted into the Honor Society of Agriculture, Gamma Sigma Delta.
