Fans of “Euphoria” have had a lot to say about the show’s May 31 series finale – including famous matriarch Tina Knowles, who just shared a personal memory sparked by the show on social media.
For a little background, the Sam Levinson-directed series is a psychological teen drama that centers around a group of high school students, with Zendaya’s character Rue serving as one of the main focuses. Sadly, Rue began taking drugs at an early age, and this would prove to be one of her biggest struggles as her story progressed. At the risk of spoiling how her story ends in the series finale, let’s just say that despite her best efforts, Rue doesn’t get the happy ending fans wanted for her.
After the episode aired on Sunday, Knowles took to social media to express her thoughts about Rue’s ending and revealed to her fans and followers that her storyline was reminiscent of her own late nephew’s real life.
“I know that this was just a TV show. So why have I been depressed since yesterday? I can’t get that sad feeling out of my stomach. It feels as though I lost a family member! Maybe it’s because I like Zendaya so much, or maybe it’s because I had a nephew that reminded me so much of Rue,” she began in a post to Instagram on Monday (June 1).
Knowles went on to describe her nephew as “one of her favorite people on Earth” when he was doing well, adding that he stayed with her every summer when he was a kid. However, by the time he got to college, their relationship suffered due to his gradual addiction, though Knowles didn’t specify a particular drug. She later shared that she tried to help him kick his bad habit and tried to aid in his betterment.
“I tried everything in my power to save him, payed [sic] for rehab several times, bought him cars, got him out of several dangerous situations, sneaking girls in my house, (in which Bey and I were laughing today because he bribed her not to tell with honey buns ),” Knowles explained. “Smoking weed and blowing it out the bathroom window, and he always landed on his feet, though, because he was so charming and so handsome and so smart and talented.”
Knowles then went on to share that her nephew would be in a cycle where he’d do well for a while and then “fall off the wagon” and go back to using. But, after so many years and so many attempts at helping, he couldn’t stick with it and sadly became “his own worst enemy” before eventually dying at 40 to unknown conditions.
“No matter what we did, we couldn’t save him. He was his own worst enemy. At 40, he passed away. I still don’t know what the conditions were. It broke my heart,” Knowles concluded. “And I realize that this is bringing up all the feelings again. It is a testament to how amazing Zendaya is as an actress because I felt every bit of pain, every bit of joy, every bit of confusion that she was feeling.”
