Seeing as how there’s quite literally so much to do and so very little time to do it, we’ve broken down some of the major things we’re looking forward to at this year’s festival. From big performers to major appearances, keep reading for more info!

For the very first time, Cardi B. will be coming “Outside” and taking over New Orleans for her debut performance at this year’s festival. While she’s the main act on Friday night, the evening will be filled to the brim with amazing artists leading up to then. If you somehow missed the announcement, other music acts that’ll be jamming on the stage include Kehlani, Latto, Joe Kay, and Soulection, providing the DJ sounds of the night!

Saturday night will be full of true “sangers,” as Brandy and Monica are set to join forces again to bring their beloved “The Boy Is Mine” energy back to the main stage. Other acts announced for that evening include Babyface, Patti LaBelle, Leon Thomas, and Josh Levi. Kenny Burns and Sherri Shepherd will also serve as MCs for the night!

Missy Elliott’s Tribute to Aaliyah

Sunday night will also go down in a major way thanks to Missy Elliott’s special, curated tribute to the late Aaliyah. While she’s keeping the specific performers under wraps for now, we already know whoever takes the stage is going to be just right given Elliott’s taste.

The other good thing about this tribute, too? It’s got the blessing of Aaliyah’s mom and brother, so we can expect it to be a sweet time from start to finish. “In 1995, my sister performed at the inaugural Essence festival alongside an impressive line-up of legendary performers. It was so successful that it became a yearly celebration of our culture, and an illumination of the power of Black women’s voices within it,” Aaliyah’s Rashad said. “31 years later, I am overcome with gratitude to the founders, artists, and the inimitable Missy Elliott for honoring my sister with this tribute, celebrating her life, art, and ongoing legacy.”

The Fabulous Fashions & Streetwear

One thing about Black folks? We always know how to step out and show up for special occasions. And you better believe we’re popping out to ESSENCE Fest looking all kinds of good. From daytime, casual swag outfits that are cool yet chic to the nighttime fits that are both fly and functional, we can’t wait to see just how we step out for our favorite cultural event of the summer.

If there’s anybody we love and will continue to love, it’s our forever first lady, Michelle Obama. And for everybody headed to New Orleans, you’re in for a special treat as she’ll be returning to the city for a special, live taping of her “IMO” podcast on Friday night! We already know the conversation will be full of gems and genuine laughs, so make sure you tap in and head to the Convention Center to take part in it.
