After Months of Doubt, Family of Georgia Twins Say They’ve Accepted the Painful Truth About Their Deaths

It’s been over a year since the bodies of 19-year-old twin brothers Qaadir and Naazir Lewis were discovered atop a remote North Georgia mountain. For months, their family searched for answers to explain the suspicious circumstances surrounding their untimely deaths.

But now, a heartbreaking conclusion has been reached: the evidence supports investigators’ finding that the brothers died by suicide.

The announcement marks a painful turning point in a case that fueled widespread speculation and public skepticism after the twins were found with gunshot wounds on Bell Mountain in Towns County in March 2025, we previously told you. Relatives had long questioned the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s conclusion, insisting the brothers showed no signs they were contemplating suicide and arguing key questions about their final hours remained unanswered.

Now, after commissioning their own independent reviews and examining the state’s investigative file, the family says it is prepared to accept the official findings.

“In our search for answers and clarity, we carefully reviewed the Georgia Bureau of Investigation [GBI] case files and retained two independent homicide investigators who thoroughly reviewed the evidence and investigative records,” the twins’ aunt, Yasmine Brawner, wrote in a statement. She said the family also obtained independent autopsy reviews, all of which aligned with the GBI’s determination that the brothers’ deaths were self-inflicted.

The GBI initially described the case as a possible murder-suicide before completing a more extensive investigation, The Root also reported. Authorities later concluded that both brothers died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds, citing forensic evidence and other investigative findings. Among the evidence was documentation that Naazir Lewis had purchased the ammunition used in the firearm days before the brothers traveled to Bell Mountain, according to CNN.

The family’s acceptance follows months of independent investigation funded in part through public donations. Brawner thanked supporters whose contributions helped cover burial expenses, pay for outside forensic reviews and investigators, and provide mental health counseling for grieving relatives.

“Your contributions helped us cover burial expenses, obtain independent autopsy reviews, retain two independent homicide investigators to carefully review the case files, and support mental health counseling for our family during this difficult time,” the aunt added. “We are deeply grateful for every act of support and compassion shown to us.”

Family members had previously said they believed the twins were preparing to visit friends in Boston around the time they disappeared, making their discovery hundreds of miles away all the more suspicious, we told you.

For the Lewis family, accepting the official conclusion does not erase the grief. Instead, relatives say they hope the next chapter of the twins’ legacy centers on mental health awareness and encouraging others to seek help before a crisis becomes irreversible.

The family continued, “While this has been incredibly painful to accept, we remain committed to honoring Naazir and Qaadir’s memory, promoting mental health awareness, and helping others know they are not alone.”
