There are a few things Black people don’t play about, and a good UNO game is one of them. One “Draw 4” will have you questioning your entire relationship with your opponent. Now, Mattel wants fans of the game to bring all the smoke in an upcoming UNO Championship, where players will compete for $50,000 live on Twitch. Since the news was announced, Black folks have been asking how they can get in on the action.
The Hollywood Reporter reported Wednesday (Aug. 19) that Mattel announced the first-ever UNO Championship, a live competition that will turn the card game into an all-out tournament. According to the company, the competition will capture the “unpredictable, chaotic fun” that has made UNO a “true cultural phenomenon.”
For new players, UNO is a popular card game where players race to get rid of all the cards in their hand. They take turns matching the card on the discard pile by color, number, or symbol, in hopes of being the first player to get down to a single card and, of course, yell “UNO” before someone catches you.

Talk of the tournament spilled over onto X, where Black folks are already doing the Birdman hand rub while trying to get in on the action.
Some, like @DopeItzDev, are already dreaming about taking home the prize money.
Jemele Hill reposted the announcement, while asking two important questions: “1) What are the rules? 2) Will there be security?”
Some had very specific questions about whether the “official” rules are open to interpretation.
“The real question is: are they playing by official Mattel rules or the illegal house rules where you stack Draw 4s on top of Draw 2s…? $50K on the line is going to test some serious friendships…” posted someone on X.
Others have already expressed concern for the players’ safety if a game gets too intense. Creator Trey Jett jokingly warned the tournament organizers to “get good security,” suggesting that a couple of UNO players could quickly turn the competition into a full-blown brawl.
Jett also joked that liquor and UNO do not mix well.
But one of the most important questions came from a concerned fan on X, who wrote, “Do they allow table flipping and swear words?”
