First lady Melania Trump is making an effort to stand by her husband, Donald Trump.
The president walked into the general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly ready to denigrate world leaders who dare to defy his golden age of leadership. But before he could approach the mic, he became the butt of many online jokes.
One moment reminded social media users how things went awry during the couple’s 2025 appearance at the annual gathering in New York.
The U.S. president, first lady Melania Trump, and their entourage were seen walking through the U.N. headquarters.
At one point, the 80-year-old flashed an expressionless glance and wave at reporters gathered in the lobby.
Multiple members of the media called out, “Mr. President,” and another person asked about the status of the U.S.-Iran conflict.
Trump continued, trailing behind his wife. He was a few steps away from the landing platform of an all-too-familiar escalator when the trolling began.
Melania stepped up first, her gaze locked straight ahead.
Then, as Trump approached the moving staircase, a female reporter yelled out, “Watch the stairs! Be careful with the stairs!”
Only then did Melania look back towards the journalist and smile. She then turned in the opposite direction, obscuring her mouth from cameras, and uttered something to her husband.
“Melania Trump found that funny. Trouble in paradise,” an X user commented as the clip spread on social media.
The couple, who have been married for 21 years, have faced a litany of rumors about a marital rift throughout Trump’s second term in office.
The former model’s lack of joint appearances fuels the banter, where countless people suspect a financial incentive motivated her to attend events like the World Cup Final and his Fourth of July celebration.
Still, others were certain that Melania’s sense of humor struck a nerve.
A staunch critic of the Republican noticed, “Melania smiled. I bet that riled Trump big time.”
Two others said, “Oh, she heard that … and she loved it” and “Love how Melania heard and turned around and smirked.”
Someone on X shared a similar sentiment and tweeted, “I’m sure that absolutely crushed his fragile, little boy ego, especially coming from a female journalist with a mocking tone.”
Another person wondered, “Who is that diva?” referring to the unidentified reporter.
Trump suffered a blunder on the same escalator last year. The escalator quit operating right as he and Melania gained their footing on the stairs.
“Fortunately, my first lady was very strong, and I was able to grab her back or another part of her body,” Trump told reporters last week during an Oval Office media session, a claim the video evidence does not corroborate.
His cringe recollection continued, “It was actually a little bit lower than the back, and it kept me standing tall. I was standing very tall.”
The embarrassing ordeal also derailed his U.N. speech last September 2025.
“All I got from the United Nations was an escalator that, on the way up, stopped right in the middle,” Trump told the crowd. “If the first lady wasn’t in great shape, she would have fallen, but she’s in great shape. We’re both in good shape.”
The teleprompter also went out during that same public appearance, leaving Trump to weave his way through diplomatic remarks and personal rants.
Trump’s remarks played out similarly this year, but this time he didn’t experience technical difficulties.
