Hollywood Unlocked founder Jason Lee’s tenure as the Vice Mayor of Stockton, California, has come to an abrupt end. Unfortunately, his time serving the city didn’t exactly end on his terms.
As you may recall, Lee was elected to the position in January 2025. His term was expected to end in December 2026, according to Sacramento station KCRA 3. Now, according to new reports released on Wednesday (Oct. 14), Lee was planning to resign from his role because he felt the position didn’t allow him to bring about the change he was seeking.
“I’m going to resign as the vice mayor, and here’s the deal because the title doesn’t drive leadership,” Lee told the outlet the day before the news broke. “The title doesn’t change anything.”
However, in a plot twist that neither Lee nor any of his constituents saw coming, the media founder was ousted from his position on Wednesday by the Stockton City Council after a 4-2 vote rejecting his resignation.
“My purpose was not given to me by this council, and it cannot be taken away by a vote of this council,” Lee said in the meeting after being told of the vote for his removal.
Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi also spoke out in a separate statement after proposing that Lee also be removed from his council committee roles, saying: “The actions taken by the city council are consistent with its role to ensure good governance, accountability, and the orderly performance of city business. Our responsibility is to the residents of Stockton and to ensure that our governing institutions are functioning effectively and in alignment with the values of our great city.”
According to the independent newsroom, Stocktonia, Fugazi cited a “breakdown in trust” along with “disagreements about government oversight, transparency and council conduct” as key factors that led to the decision to remove Lee from his position.
By the time Lee’s professional news began circulating on social media, many were divided about it. Although some saw it as a positive that he “got ahead” of the removal, many people felt as if the decision to get him out of there was the right move, as he never should’ve been elected in the first place.
“He got a tip they were gonna fire him, so he tried to jump in front of it, and they said Aht Aht,” wrote one user on X/Twitter.
“The fact that he was even in this position to begin with is a failure to the competence of our society,” said another.
One other user wrote, “He wanted a ‘you can’t fire me, I quit’ moment so badly, and they said actually, we can, and we did.”
Added another: “I hate y’all for even letting this happen!! This should have literally never happened! Who lets a gossip blogger be their mayor? What idiots voted for this?? Close the whole damn town down.”
Lee is expected to dish out more details soon on exactly how this professional kerfuffle really went down.
