Even as we enter the summer, The Root is already thinking about the upcoming school year when Black students will walk onto the campuses of the nation’s top Historically Black Universities and Colleges (HBCUs) — some for the very first time. May 1 marked National College Decision Day, when students across the globe choose their home for the next four years. Although we know students love our HBCUs for their academic excellence, life outside the classroom also plays a huge part in their decision.
College is more than simply hitting the books. Balancing studying with a good party— on the weekends, of course— is part of the experience. School admins usually don’t like to be labeled “party schools,” but that’s part of the appeal, right?! Students need a release. That’s why we’re taking a look at what the party life is like at some of the most well-known HBCUs in the nation.
Howard University

With notable alumni like Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and Pulitzer Prize winner Toni Morrison, Howard is regarded as a source of Black excellence and achievement. At the same time, “the Mecca” is more than strictly business.
Situated in the middle of “Chocolate City,” Howard University is close to the heart of one of Washington, D.C.’s party districts. You can catch Howard students at “Thirsty Thursdays” on U Street or at the “darties” (day-parties) on the Yard between classes. Homecoming brings out the celebrities and Howard alumni from around the world. Whenever you step on Howard’s campus, expect there to always be something going on. Students say that’s just how life at H-U goes… You know!
Tuskegee University

You might not expect this university, dropped in the middle of Tuskegee, Alabama, to have a popping party scene, but students and alumni can tell you that being located in a rural area forces you to get creative.
Tuskegee’s homecoming is one of the most highly-anticipated events of the school year. With a lengthy lineup of events and parties, students say you’ll always find something to get into when you’re not studying to become the next Black doctor.
Alabama State University
Despite having just over 3,000 students on its campus, Alabama State is known for its parties and homecoming, which brings in thousands annually.
With alumni including radio host Rickey Smiley and rapper 2 Chainz, it’s clear that the HBCU is anything but quiet. Known for its amazing marching band, the school is also located in Montgomery, Alabama, a city with a rich civil rights history and a chill but memorable party scene.
Florida A&M University
With Florida State University only three miles away, it’s not shocking that Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University would have some action spilling over. With college bars and urban clubs located nearby, students have easy access to social activities. Being so close to other universities also makes party life that much more entertaining.
The school is located in Tallahassee, Florida, an area known for its niche nightlife. With this in mind, the FAMU community takes full advantage of the beautiful Florida weather and even more amazing clubs and house parties.
The Entire AUC

You can’t mention Spelman College’s party life without including Morehouse College. The schools are basically next door to each other. During the day, Spelmanites and Morehouse men attend the same classes and often find themselves at the same functions at night.
Clark Atlanta University joins Spelhouse to create the Atlanta University Center Consortium (AUC). In addition to sharing a city, the three colleges share the party responsibilities evenly. Around the AUC, students and their greater communities advertise parties, clubs, bars, and concerts for everybody and their mommas! If you ever get sick of AUC functions, there’s so much more to explore throughout Atlanta, a city famous for its strip clubs and hot lemon-pepper wings!
Southern University
Located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Southern University is home to a vibrant nightlife. From uniquely themed bars to hidden gems, a night out in the city will never disappoint.
For those who prefer to stay close to campus, Southern University students know exactly how to have a great time. After working hard during the day, many enjoy kickbacks and house parties. With that southern weather, it hardly ever gets too cold to go outside.
North Carolina A & T University
With their homecoming deemed the “Greatest Homecoming On Earth” (GHOE), it’s not shocking that NCAT would end up on this list. The university is one of the most diverse HBCUs in the country, and its party scene reflects this.
According to Niche, North Carolina A&T ranks 37th on their list of party schools, which is relatively high among the 1,512 colleges on the list. Located in the third-largest city in North Carolina, NCAT is the perfect place to experience all that Greensboro has to offer.
Alabama A&M University

Alabama is home to 14 different HBCUs – the most of any state in the nation. With that being said, Alabama A&M University is known for its stellar band and close-knit community, and it’s no surprise that music brings the university together on campus and beyond.
There’s not much to do in Huntsville, Alabama, so AAMU students have to be creative. Of course, homecoming season brings in thousands from across the country, but on a weekly bias, students and staff enjoy bars, clubs, and parties on and off campus.
Hampton University

Hampton University, located in Virginia, has over 55 campus organizations, making it the perfect place to not only find something for every interest but to experience an amazing party scene. The university gets a bad rap for being easy to get lost in parties and other fun, but students know it takes real work to balance an active social life with obtaining a degree.
With lots of bars, clubs, and lounges located nearby, Hampton remains a great place to party and get to know residents in the area.
Morgan State University

Going to a Black school in a Black city is an unmatched experience. For students at Morgan State University, living in Baltimore, Maryland, allows them to be present beyond the classroom.
If there is an event flyer posted on campus, you can bet you’ll know someone going to the function, and campus DJs set the tone for the whole weekend. And once you leave the Morgan State campus, Baltimore’s colorful culture has plenty of great food, clubs and events for the public to enjoy.
Tennessee State University
There’s always a debate about which school is the “real” TSU— Tennessee State or Texas Southern University— but what shouldn’t be questioned is Tennessee State’s underrated party scene.
Homecoming brings out the best the university has to offer, but students know exactly where to go to have a good time every week. Never sleep on Tennessee! Their food is the bomb, and the parties will have you sweating.
North Carolina Central University

Located in Durham, North Carolina, North Carolina Central University (NCCU) is another small but mighty university, and its students get creative with how they choose to have fun.
From lively clubs to car shows and food spots, fun activities aren’t hard to find. NCCU students are always in the know about the next big event, and if you ever visit during Homecoming season, know that you are in for a treat.
Xavier University

Although Xavier University of Louisiana is a school based in Catholic tradition, its students are more than aware of New Orleans culture. The city known for Mardi Gras is also well-known for its vibrant and one-of-a-kind party scene.
Students attending Xavier reserve their weekends for getting into trouble in the city. From clubs to random street parades, Xavier students are always on the hunt for the next exciting thing that their city has to offer.
Jackson State University

Last but certainly not least is Mississippi’s own Jackson State University. Being one of many HBCUs in Mississippi, Jackson State is well-known for its unique majorette culture and diverse Black population.
If you’re trying to party, Jackson State is a great place to go. The students have that Southern hospitality that is entrancing, and Mississippi is known for its relaxed but exciting party scene. With lots of culture and city life to keep them entertained, the Jackson State community never gets bored.
