Jasmine Guy is pushing back against the criticism that followed her return as Whitley Gilbert in Netflix’s new “A Different World” sequel
Guy, 64, addressed fan reactions, including criticism that getting older should not make women targets of public scrutiny simply for aging.
Viewers began comparing her appearance in the new series with the way she looked when the original sitcom debuted nearly four decades ago.
The sequel began streaming Sept. 24, bringing Guy and several other original cast members back to Hillman College.
Rather than respond directly to individual critics, the actress used the attention to discuss the broader expectations placed on women as they age.
“The internet can be brutal to women as we grow older. It asks us to celebrate life while criticizing every sign that we’ve lived it,” Guy wrote in her Instagram caption.
She acknowledged that aging can bring changes that are not always easy to accept, but pushed back against the idea that growing older should diminish a woman’s beauty or value.
“Growing older brings change, and I won’t pretend every change is easy,” she said, later adding, “Beauty, style, and joy don’t have an expiration date.”
Guy addressed the online commentary as fans revisited her defining television role. She first portrayed Whitley on “A Different World” in 1987, transforming the character into the breakout star of the popular NBC sitcom.
The new Netflix sequel introduces a new generation at the fictional historically Black Hillman College while bringing back several familiar faces.
Guy returns as Whitley alongside Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne, with their daughter Deborah, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, at the center of the new story. Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell also return, along with other original cast members.
The sequel arrived 39 years after the original sitcom debuted. It brought nostalgia for viewers who grew up watching Guy as Whitley.
The show celebrated its Atlanta launch at Morehouse College’s Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel. Original Hillman alumni joined the new cast.
But the nostalgia quickly gave way to online criticism from some social media users who focused heavily on Guy’s changed appearance.
Undeterred, the actress’ response prompted an outpouring of support from fans celebrating her 40-year career and enduring grace.
One commenter praised her for building a legacy that spans decades. Television host and author Monique Kelley wrote to Guy, “All love!!! You are legendary! And you still look absolutely beautiful! Getting older is a privilege. The goal was never to try to be back to our 20s and 30s but to live a life that makes the younger women excited to get older.”
Others described her as an icon “then and now” and criticized the internet for targeting women simply for growing older.
“The internet can be so cruel to women for simply living long enough to age, but please know so many of us see your beauty, your talent, and the legacy you’ve built. We love you,” one person commented.
Other commenters took a similar approach, emphasizing that reaching later stages of life is something to appreciate rather than ridicule. The commenter chimed in, “Not everyone is afforded the privilege of reaching 30, the grace of 40, or the glory of 50 and beyond. There is beauty in every decade, every evolution, every version of the woman you have become.”
The user finished, “May we never diminish the extraordinary privilege of having lived long enough to becoming.”
Another commenter simply told Guy, “You ARE IT.”
Guy’s remarks on aging align with her growing openness regarding her aesthetic care. The actress routinely shares updates from her visits to Pretty Faces Atlanta. The Buckhead-based medical aesthetics practice specializes in non-surgical skin rejuvenation.
In April 2024, Guy underwent a Hydrafacial. The medical-grade treatment combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction and hydration with a Vortex-Fusion device.
Guy’s treatment history continued later that year. She received a PDO filler thread procedure at the Atlanta practice, a nonsurgical treatment that has been described as similar to a facelift. Unlike a traditional surgical facelift, the procedure uses dissolvable threads to create a lifting effect without surgery.
She has also documented recent Pico laser treatments at Pretty Faces Atlanta. The non-invasive procedure delivers ultra-short energy pulses to target dark spots, minimize scars, and balance uneven skin tone.

Guy has openly documented efforts to care for her skin and address changes in her appearance. But her response to the recent criticism did not suggest that she believes aging is something she needs to hide.
