In Rare TikTok, Idris Elba’s Wife Speaks Out On Racism She Recently Experienced

It’s been just over a week since Idris Elba was honored by King Charles III in England for the charitable work he and his wife, Sabrina Dhowre Elba, do for young folks in the United Kingdom and around the world. Yet, despite the valuable philanthropy the couple does in the country, Sabrina Dhowre Elba just got hit with the harsh reminder that no matter how much she contributes to helping the U.K., some racist folk will always make her feel othered in Britain.

Getting on TikTok, Elba spoke to her followers in a rare personal video to talk about a hostile encounter she had with a woman in England after her car was rear-ended. Beginning by addressing that she doesn’t like to use social media to vent about her personal life, Elba said this incident was something she needed to get off her chest.

“This woman backed up into my parked car, and when I got out to speak to her about the interaction, it immediately became hostile. She very quickly asked me, ‘Where are you from?’ Keep in mind this woman backed up into my parked car,” she said. “I said Canadian, and then she asked again.”

At this point, Elba realized that the woman wasn’t attempting to ask a simple question but was turning their conversation into a racist encounter.

The model added, “I think a lot of people know what that question means when they’re asked in a certain tone. She wasn’t asking for my geography; she was trying to change the terms of the interaction. And suddenly, it wasn’t about the fact that she had hit my car, it was about whether or not I belonged enough to hold her accountable.”

Highlighting the current political climate in the U.K., where right-wing parties have been calling for a British version of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) policies and racist attacks have been on the rise throughout the United Kingdom, Elba added that being asked where you’re from is a coded way of making immigrants in Britain feel like they do not have the right to be there.

“That language doesn’t ever stay abstract; it becomes social permission. It becomes permission from people like her, and it tells people that their suspicions are legitimate. Their resentment (towards immigrants) then becomes reasonable, and their contempt is like some kind of screwed-up common sense. And then it shows up in ordinary life, like in a car park, or in a queue, or in a stranger’s tone when they ask you, ‘Where are you from?’” She said. “People are going to say maybe she was just having a bad day, but she backed up into me, and then questioned my right to question her.”

Elba told her followers that her interaction with the lady didn’t just feel like a misunderstanding of her personality but a pattern of hostility that she is noticing growing across England. That animosity allows racist folks to feel comfortable making Black and Brown people feel as though they’re “conditional citizens.”

“You can live here, work here, and contribute here and build a life here, but in the wrong moment with the wrong person, belonging is still treated like something they have the right to question,” she added. “And I think that’s what upset me.”

As of yet, Idris Elba has not made public comments on the situation, but on Sabrina Dhowre’s TikTok, fans have shown their support for the model.

“I’m so sorry this happened. Every single day, I become more embarrassed by what this country is turning into,” wrote one user.

“I’m sorry you went through this, but very glad you raised this incident because there is a ‘shift’ happening that a lot of us can feel,” added another.

“Thank you for speaking on this. I hope you are ok. I thought I was going mad; the mood is switching. I feel and experience the shift working in education in the UK and listening to interactions,” commented a third.
