Why Fans Are Pissed About Ayesha Curry’s New Christmas Film

Steph Curry may be excited about his wife Ayesha‘s upcoming Christmas movie, “Second Chance Holiday,” but some of his NBA fans aren’t – and they’re letting the celebrity couple know online.

Ayesha stars in the forthcoming Roku movie as a girl who has been unlucky in love, but returns to her hometown and reunites with her high school sweetheart. When the trailer dropped on Wednesday (Oct. 27), the NBA champion was quick to hop on social media to praise his wife for her new project.

“My Leading Lady. I get to see the work behind the scenes, and now the world gets to see you shine, and this is just the beginning,” he wrote while sharing the film’s trailer.

Unfortunately, Ayesha’s project and Steph’s support rubbed more than a handful of people the wrong way. And they wasted no time expressing their frustrations on social media. A majority of the critics felt that the role was humiliating to Steph and just another example of Ayesha seeking male attention.

However, if we’re keeping it all the way real: the backlash against Ayesha is rooted in the same old misogynoir that treats Black women as villains for daring to make their own choices, even when their husbands are fully supportive. Accusing her of embarrassing Steph (and even going so far as to refer to the four-time NBA championship winner as a “cuck”) assumes that her taking on a romantic leading role is somehow a betrayal of her marriage, as if she needs to shrink her career to protect his masculinity. It’s also important to note that Ayesha was already a budding actress when she started dating Steph.

That kind of thinking is rooted in policing women’s behavior and leans on harmful stereotypes that paint Black women as disloyal, disrespectful and incapable of being good wives. Don’t believe us? Just listen to what this TikTok user had to say.

“There’s literally no way to defend this. Because what do you mean you’re a 6’3, multi-millionaire that is unanimously recognized as the greatest shooter that humanity has ever witnessed, but yet your wife still feels the need to star in a movie where the whole plot is that her character is dating a bunch of guys but it’s not going well until she finally finds love with her high school sweetheart?” user Chu Chu stated.

He continued in part: “Some people are gonna say I’m being dramatic. ‘It’s just a movie.’ But I’m sorry, it’s a little weird to star in a movie like this when she has admitted that despite being married to arguably a Top 10 Most Desirable Man in human history—she still craves male attention. It almost feels like she’s living vicariously through this character that she’s playing.”

“She said she cheating one way or the other,” wrote one user in the comments.

Added another: “You’re not overthinking man. This has been an ongoing issue!”

Over on X/Twitter, folks issued similar sentiments.

“Ayesha Curry (who’s only been in one serious relationship) chose to be in a movie about leaving her boyfriend for another a dude that she was attracted to in highschool??? That’s actually insane,” said one person.

One other user noted: “Curry’s stuck with a TERRIBLE team and after the game still has to deal with Ayesha #FreeCurry.”

Thankfully, there are others online who aren’t buying into the foolishness and are defending the couple’s decision to make the movie, arguing that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with a husband supporting his wife’s career and calling out those who feel otherwise.

“Men really jumping Ayesha for doing a movie, dating an athlete sounds like hell,” wrote one user on X/Twitter.

“Ayesha Curry is an actress, get that through your head,” said another.

Another user noted: “Every blue moon I have to defend Ayesha Curry like my life depends on it. And it’s always over some dumb bullsh*t. No actual cheating allegations, no other real relationship outside of Steph her entire life, a dedicated wife/mom; and yet she’s treated like the worst of scum?”

Over on TikTok, user BeanieBee even encouraged all the women online to tune into the film so that Ayesha can feel the support.

“That man [Steph] don’t know you, he don’t care about you. You’re doing this to his wife, which is weird. So, I need all the girls to make sure that you’re tapped in. You got the Roku channel? Go’head and do whatever you need to do. November 5th, we’re all gonna watch to make sure that the movie goes number one. Because I don’t play that. I don’t play that; the men are weird,” she explained.
