It’s a known fact that relationships have it’s ups and downs, and it looks like HGTV stars Joanna Gaines and Chip Gaines are back on the up.
The couple showcases their home renovations on “Fixer Upper.” The popular series follows the pair as they transform homes in desirable neighborhoods.
Their on-screen brand has built them a devoted fan base that adores the strength of their 23-year marriage, their family, and their joint business ventures. But when rumors of marital strife surfaced, people got nervous.

RadarOnline reported in 2025 that a source it didn’t name told it the Gaineses ran into a rough patch in their marriage last year as they struggled to balance the public’s expectations with their businesses and faith.
But on Nov. 4, Joanna appeared on the “Not Gonna Lie” podcast and shared a shocking update about their marriage.
“I love just how opposite we are,” she said. “I do feel like once you understand that Chip’s strengths and my strengths are very different, but together, it really does create magic. There’s a tension there, but then there’s power there that really happens when you embrace it.”
Joanna said she and her husband are both OK with evolving, and she credits Chip for pushing them to be their best.
She confessed, “I mean, if it were up to me, I would’ve been the same person I was at 14. I always joke I am literally wearing the same brand eyeliner, blush and lipstick since I turned 13.”
The 48-year-old said they both respect each other’s differences.
“I look at Chip and I’m like ‘Dang, I’m so jealous of the way you can just be Chip and say it and not care and carry it.’ He’s just good at that. And then he would say on the other side, ‘Hey I like how you’re a little more thoughtful.”
Joanna also praised how they work through the “chaos” and “discomfort” together in every season.
“I would say every year, there’s always something that’s uncomfortable or that’s challenging us. We’ve never had the luxury of just coasting,” she admitted.
She referenced their huge challenge in 2008, when the housing market crash hit and left them with $100,000 in debt. Joanna said at that time they had to figure out how to pay their employees and vendors without going bankrupt.
The housing expert also pointed to a recent shift in how they approach their marriage.
“There’s a shift happening. And I am turning more into Chip and Chip is turning more into me. And that’s funny to watch,” she said.
She said she is becoming more extroverted while her husband is more introverted.
“It’s like dating all over again,” Joanna added before calling Chip her “best friend.”
One People magazine reader reacted to Joanna sharing her marriage secrets. They wrote, “Love those two!!! The mutual respect, admiration, love, playfulness & kindness they have for one another…!”
Another person who appears to be a big fan of Joanna wrote, “I too watched Fixer Upper and loved the show. She is also so down to earth like you Kylie! Such a great episode!”
An admirer who loves the Gaineses together said, “I just love Joanna Gaines! Been watching the show for years! Chip and Joanna together are amazing! Great guest Kylie!”
Chip and Joanna first met in 2001 at her father’s auto shop in Waco, Texas. After about a year of dating, they were engaged, and the next year they jumped the broom.
They currently have five children together: Drake Gaines, 21, Ella Gaines, 20, Duke Gaines, 18, Emmie Gaines, 16, and 8-year-old Crew Gaines.
The same year they got married, they went into business together, opening their first home goods store called Magnolia Market. They went on to also open a real estate company called Magnolia Realty. Chip also had a large landscaping business and was flipping homes.
Then their HGTV show “Fixer Upper” aired in 2013, and it drew in millions of viewers. According to Parade, they have a collective net worth of $50 million.
But last year, an unnamed purprted source told RadarOnline they were struggling to keep their fans pleased while managing their businesses and upholding their Christian faith.
The insider said, “They wear on each other’s nerves, and sometimes that bubbles over. They get very cold towards each other. They don’t have poker faces. I’ve seen that firsthand.”
In July 2025, they launched their show, “Back to the Frontier,” on their Magnolia Network. The show is a social experiment that challenges contestants to live as 1880 homesteaders for eight weeks. One of the three families was a same sex couple who had a son, and it drew backlash from the Gaines’ conservative Christian fans.
Chip defended his and Joanna’s decision on X.
He wrote, “Talk, ask qustns, listen.. maybe even learn. Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never It’s a sad sunday when “non believers” have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian.”
There has not been any word on if the show was renewed for season 2.
However, they have a new show coming out Dec. 27 called “Chip Bought a Mansion,” which will show the couple renovating a 15,000-square-foot mansion in Waco, Texas.
