Nia Long exuded timeless elegance for her Met Gala debut, stepping onto the carpet in her signature natural glam. She paired the understated beauty look with a custom black strapless gown by LaQuan Smith, featuring a plunging neckline. She completed the ensemble with a statement emerald-and-diamond encrusted necklace that rested elegantly across her chest.
For the occasion, the vision centered on skin that felt effortless but intentional. “We wanted the skin to be the moment—something soft, sculptural, refined, and undeniably glam,” Camille Thompson, Nia Long’s makeup artist, tells ESSENCE exclusively. “The inspiration was really about enhancing Nia’s natural bone structure and letting her features lead. It’s a look that feels modern and intentional, with just enough drama to hold its own on a red carpet like the Met.”
Thompson used Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation as the base for its balance of coverage and skin-like wear that could hold up under flashing lights and hours on the carpet. From there, they layered dimension using Bronze Goddess bronzer and highlighter along with Futurist blush to softly sculpt the face, strategically placing warmth and glow while keeping everything seamlessly blended. “The goal is to create structure and polish without ever losing that natural skin quality,” Thompson explains.
While the energy is always high, Long has a way of making her team feel grounded and relaxed amidst the chaos. “The vibe with Nia is always relaxed yet focused,” Thompson shares. “For a moment like the Met Gala, there’s of course a level of excitement but also control. We really take our time, refine each step, and make sure everything feels right. It’s that balance of calm energy and precision.”
As for Thompson, no matter how many final looks she sees the end product will never not be rewarding. “What I love most is the transformation but not in the sense of changing the person. It’s about enhancing and amplifying who they already are,” Thompson explains. “Few moments compare to the Met Gala because it’s such an incredible moment for fashion, beauty, and the energy of it all to come together.”
