Days after Barack Obama had a Cleveland crowd howling at his expense, Donald Trump still could not let it go.
The White House tried to play it cool first, turning the joke into a social media gag meant to put the former president in his place.
By Monday afternoon, though, Trump was standing in front of cameras with a scowl, delivering a three-minute defense of his decorating skills that people say only made the punchline hit harder.

It was his second swing at Obama in as many days, following an early-morning Truth Social rant on Sunday. This time, one loaded phrase had people doing a double take.
Trump wasn’t just defending his renovations. He was questioning whether “guys like Obama” can even see dirt.

The whole thing started with a punchline. On Saturday, Oct. 24, Obama took the stage in Cleveland to rally for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Dr. Amy Acton and Senate hopeful Sherrod Brown ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
He ran through Trump’s White House projects, from the massive ballroom to the gold now splashed across the building. “He should be on HGTV,” Obama joked during rally in Ohio. “He’s paved over the Rose Garden. He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory!”
The crowd roared. Trump’s team did not.
By Monday, the White House had answered with a mocked-up Cheesecake Factory menu on X, swapping the restaurant’s famously endless list of dishes for Trump’s so-called accomplishments, with items like “Border Security Special,” “Working Families Tax Cuts” and “Peace Through Strength.” The caption claimed the only thing bigger than the menu was Trump’s list of wins.
The administration even sent Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to eat lunch at an actual Cheesecake Factory. Afterward, he told reporters the “Martha’s Vineyard set” should give it a try, as seen in another post on X.
Then Trump took the mic himself.
Speaking to reporters Monday as he headed to Mississippi to rally for Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, Trump insisted he had fixed the White House “with the finest artisans in the world” and claimed Obama left it “in terrible shape.”
That’s when the conversation took a turn.
“Guys like Obama, they would pass the front door, they would see the broken masonry … and he wouldn’t notice because he doesn’t notice that,” Trump said. “He wouldn’t notice dirt and filth where the walls haven’t been cleaned for years.”
He kept going. “Guys like Obama don’t see it. You don’t see dirt. He doesn’t see filth. He doesn’t see broken ornaments on a building.”
Trump then bragged that keeping the place up takes him just “five minutes a day, ten minutes a day” because, as he put it, “I’m a very clean person.”
Then he aimed his final shot squarely at Obama. “For you to say it’s a Cheesecake Factory, that just shows why you were a lousy president.”
Social media did not hold back with reactions to Trump’s remarks.
“Not the first time he’s said this racist trope recently,” one person replied under a clip of the rant.
Others couldn’t get past the look on Trump’s face. Another user wrote that the funniest part was watching Trump “accidentally prove Obama got under his skin.”
Another person poked fun at Trump’s logic, writing, “Yeah guys like Obama is worried about silly things like the economy.”
One X user said Obama was “living large and rent-free in Trump’s head.”
And one critic pushed back on the idea that Obama neglected the building at all. “No, he had more important things to do than paint and redecorate. He had a country to run.”
Monday’s back-and-forth is only the latest round in a feud that goes back more than a decade, and Obama has clearly been enjoying it.
In May, he went on “The Late Show” and mocked Trump over Iran, telling Stephen Colbert that Trump opposed the nuclear deal “because I did it.” That same month, Trump dragged Michelle Obama into the feud, a move critics said there was no coming back from.
In June, Obama addressed Trump’s weird obsession head-on during an appearance on the “All the Smoke” podcast. “I obviously have a room in his head … a suite in his head,” he said.
And in September, after Trump banned three major outlets from the White House, Obama asked a crowd at Colgate University to picture the outrage if he had ever booted Fox News. “It’s unimaginable!” he said.
With the midterms just over a week away, Obama has been stumping hard for Democrats, and Trump keeps taking the bait. If Monday proved anything, it’s that Obama barely has to raise his voice. He just has to tell a joke.
